There's a lot going on at Deb Mitzel Photography!  This year I’ve launched a fun and exciting program for upcoming high school seniors, the Deb Mitzel Photography Senior Model Program.  MODEL program?  For some of you the word model may drum up visions of “too thin” girls walking down runways in clothing that you’d never be able to actually wear out in the “real world”.   Yep, me too – guilty as charged.  HOWEVER…even though the word is the same, my model program is more about the first definition of the word model from the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

  • a standard or example for imitation or comparison.

Yes, there are other definitions right after that, namely:

  • a person or thing that serves as a subject for an artist, sculptor, or writer.
  • a person whose profession is posing for artists or photographers.
  • a person employed to wear clothing or pose with a product for purposes of display and advertising.
  • a style or design of a particular product.

But I am choosing to focus my Model Program on the things that I believe matter most for young people and adults alike – the fact that we all need models or examples in our lives – those people that can provide guidance, direction, and mentoring as we travel along the path of life. Yes, we’re going to do some of the traditional “modeling” activities – wear cute clothes and take fun and sassy photographs, but we’re also going model respect for others, and good judgment and integrity as we do.

I aspire to model those qualities for the seniors who participate in my program, and expect that they will in turn be good examples for their peers.

As I said to the seniors and their parents as I was presenting the program to them, I love working with young people at such an exciting time in their lives.  I’ve got some fun things planned for them throughout their senior year, but to be part of my program, they are also expected to represent themselves and my studio in a manner that is respectful of others and demonstrates good judgment and integrity.

There are a lot of great young people out there, and I consider it my honor and privilege to be able to provide some fun experiences for them as part of my photography business, while also getting to know and work with them.  They may learn a little from me along the way, and I’m sure to learn a few things from them as well.

I hope you’ll stay tuned to my blog, website, and social media feeds over the next year to see what we’re up to, and learn a little more about this great group of young people I will be working with.  I will be introducing them by name in the coming days, and you’ll start to see some of their photos by the end of this school year.

Until next time...

Challenge and Change | Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2016/1/challenge-and-change-brainerd-lakes-area-photographer  “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”  Think about those words, and how true they are.  If we really want something to change in our lives, it is very likely going to be a challenge for us, or we would have already made the change.  I had Kelly in the studio recently, and she has been living and breathing this motto for a few months.  She decided she wanted to make a change in her life to become more healthy, and let me tell you…she has done it…in a BIG way!  She changed her  eating habits and began exercising regularly.  She’s done a fabulous job, and has been such an inspiration, that she’s now coaching others, and helping them meet their health and fitness goals, too.

At my last count, she had lost over 35 pounds and countless inches and clothing sizes.  She looks fantastic, so it just made sense that we get her into the studio to show off her new and improved body.  Plus, she needed some new photos for her coaching business.  And just in case you’re thinking that the only thing she has on her plate to do is work out, think again!  In addition to her family roles as a wife and mother to three active kids, she also works a full time job!  If she can find the time to get it done, I’m pretty sure we all can!  In fact, she has inspired me to get back into a regular fitness routine again.  I have been slacking off a bit the past couple of years, and seeing how well she’s done has motivated me to get with it!  Thank you for your inspiration, Kelly!

The Gift of Eva | Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2016/1/the-gift-of-eva-brainerd-lakes-area-photographer    “Every day is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present”…  I’ve seen that quote posted online a lot lately, and when I sat down to blog about a beautiful little girl that I had in the studio recently, it came to mind.  I met Eva and her mom, Tina, when they came to my studio for photos on Eva’s 2nd birthday.  A sweet, vibrant two year old, I had no hint of the obstacles that Little Miss Eva had already faced in her very short time on this earth.  She had just awoken from a nap when they arrived, so her mom helped her change into her first outfit.  As she pulled her shirt up, I noticed a faint scar on her chest, but didn’t ask questions.  Shortly after, Tina told me that Eva had basically been born with half a heart, and had gone through multiple heart surgeries, spending the better part of her first year in the hospital.  This little sweetheart in front of me was a miracle child…a gift indeed!

As I photographed her and let her story soak in, I continued to be amazed at the fact that she was so much like every other two year old I’ve known… active, funny, petulant at times, sweet as can be, cute as a button, and unless you were told, you would have no idea of all she had been through, which brings another quote to mind.  “Be Kind.  For everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about” by Wendy Mass.  I’m sure this mom and daughter will face more battles in the years ahead, but likely none as great as the battle they’ve already overcome!   If you are facing difficulty in your life, I hope you will read Eva’s story and know there is hope, and that the battles you’re going through don’t have to define you.  This little miracle and her mom may have scars, but they are survivors, and I find them and their story truly inspiring.  I can’t wait to see what the future holds for little Miss Eva – she is here for a reason, and I think she’s destined for greatness!  Tina, thank you for choosing me to be your photographer, and allowing me to share your story.

A Friendship formed at Jury Duty -Brainerd Lakes Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/10/a-friendship-formed-at-jury-duty--brainerd-lakes-photographer

I really got to know this Mom after spending a day with her on jury duty.  There's nothing better to start a friendship than several hours sitting in a closed room with nothing to do but talk!  And talk we did...we found out we had a lot of things in common, and have stayed in touch ever since. I had the pleasure of taking her son's senior pictures this year, as well as these family photos that we captured at their home over Labor Day Weekend, right before all the madness of Back to School began.  It was a beautiful day, and everyone got in on the action, even their pup, Jasmine.  I guess that jury duty obligation wasn't so bad after all!

Where are your photos hiding? - Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/9/where-are-your-photos-hiding---brainerd-lakes-area-photographer Where do you keep your most precious photos?  Are they hanging on your wall, placed in a scrapbook, or displayed on your mantle?  Or are they stuck on your phone or computer hard drive where no one can see them?  Before the age of the digital camera, printing was the only way to see the photos we were taking, and once printed, unless we lost them, they were available forever.  Granted, depending on the quality of the paper and the ink, they may not have lasted forever, but they had the potential to.  Contrast that with today's photos, which largely go unprinted.  With almost everyone having a digital camera on their smartphones, there are more pictures being taken than ever before, but most of them are not being printed, and run the risk of being lost for future generations if we don't begin to change our ways, and consider the importance of those photos to future generations.

Have you ever held a photo in your hand that was taken two or three generations before you were even born?  Did you see a resemblance to your family members, and find it intriguing to connect with these people you had never met?  Wasn't that a great experience?  Now, what if that photo had been taken two or three generations ago, but no one had ever bothered to print it?  How would you have made that same connection?  Pretty impossible, right?  Now consider what your great-great grandchildren will have to look at years from now...will there be any photos of significance for them to hold in their hand to imagine what life was like for you, and make that connection?  Probably not, unless you make a habit of regularly printing photos.

Most people taking photos with their cell phones never bother to download or archive them in any way.  And, even for those of you that do, where are you storing them?  What is the likelihood that the technology you are using to store your photos today will still be around in the next 10 years, much less three generations from now?  Can you say 8 track, or even CD for that matter?  Unless you print out physical copies of your most precious photos, future generations may not ever be able to enjoy your photos or get a glimpse into your life.

I used to do a ton of scrapbooking, and have always embraced the idea of preserving and archiving photos for future generations.  I enjoy looking through old photos - they can transport you back to a time and place, whether you were physically there or not.  As a photographer, I can help you capture those important moments in your life, but it is just as important to me to help you find the right way to print and display those photos today and to preserve them for future generations to enjoy.

This is why my client collections include both prints and digital files.  I understand that many people today want to have the digital files to share with family and friends electronically, but I want to make sure that they get at least one print of each image they purchase so it doesn't get lost in the digital wasteland, unable to be found by future generations.

So, back to the first question...where are your photos hiding?  Are there things you should you be doing differently to preserve your story for future generations?  If so, take the steps to ensure your great-great grandkids can hold your photos in their hands and make a connection back to you.  If you need help getting started, contact me, and I'll do my best to point you in the right direction.

Make it a great week!

What to Wear for Senior Pictures - Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/5/what-to-wear-for-senior-pictures---brainerd-lakes-area-photographer Palm Springs Shootout 232-EditPalm Springs Shootout 232-Edit Senior Pictures - deciding what to wear can be exciting and agonizing at the same time!  For many of us, having our photos taken professionally is not a regular occurrence, so when the time comes, we want to make sure that everything is JUST RIGHT.  We want to wear something unique, but not weird...timeless, but not trendy.  Parachute pants and bandanas from the 80's?  Probably not the best choice for a timeless option!  And don't forget the fact that your senior pictures get sent to everyone and show up everywhere - on your open house cards...at your graduation party... in fact, your photo will probably hang on the wall in your parent's house for the next 15 years!  So getting it right is kind of a big deal...

And that's why I want to talk a little about clothing choices, and give you some guidelines to help you make the best decisions for your Senior Portrait session.  As a photographer, my goal in every session is to make you feel comfortable and capture the "authentic you" in my photos.  With that in mind, my first recommendation of what to wear would be something that you are comfortable in, and is representative of who you are.  If you're a country boy who loves to hunt and fish, it might look a little odd if you show up for your senior photos in plaid pants, a white shirt, and bow tie!  Chances are, that's not the "authentic you", and you might not want that photo hanging on your parent's wall a few years from now.  That might be an extreme example, but I think you get my point.  :)  So before you get too caught up in the latest trends, give some thought to who you are and what you are most comfortable in.  That's the best place to start.  The following approach will give you some ideas  to help you choose the right outfits for your session.

  1. Start off with Simple and Classic - Most seniors will have at least one outfit change, so make sure at least one outfit is classic and timeless.  Some good ideas are jeans and a solid color top, or a simple dress.  Primary colors are also a good choice - that neon green top you love so much might lose it's appeal when it's been hanging on your Grandma's fridge for five years!  It's also wise to avoid t-shirts with logos and graphics. Simple is the way to go.

  2. Add a little Pizzazz - You might kick up your classic outfit a notch by adding some accessories - jewelry, scarf, sweater, etc., or you might completely change it up.  There's nothing wrong with changing it up - perhaps something a little dressier or even your favorite team's jersey, just make sure it's totally you.  For girls, this might be the outfit that helps you channel your inner model.

  3. Finish with the "Authentic You" - Are you a football player, a soccer star, musician?  Bring your props and let your personality shine through!  We'll show off those skills in your photos.  Senior portraits capture a moment in time, so let's capture some of the things that are most important to you at this moment.

Palm Springs Shootout 436-EditPalm Springs Shootout 436-Edit

Now that we've talked about the approach you might want to take with your clothing choices, let's discuss a few more specific tips to consider:

  • Avoid distracting prints that will take the focus away from your face.  If you do wear a print, consider wearing a solid color cardigan or blazer over it to tone down the print.

  • Wear clothes that enhance your curves.  Wearing boxy clothes that are too large will make you appear bigger than you are.

  • Consider the location we will be shooting in. For example, if we are going to be in a green garden area, you might not want to wear a green outfit.

  • Ruffled tops can be your friend, but only if you have a smaller chest.  If you've got a larger chest, ruffles are not your friend.

  • Don't forget the accessories!  Jewelry, scarves, jean jackets, hats, sunglasses... they can all add a little pizzazz to your photos.

  • Don't dress too sexy - if you wouldn't want it hanging on Grandma's fridge, chances are, you don't want to wear it for your senior pictures.

  • Make sure your clothes are ironed!  Photoshop doesn't have an ironing tool, so if you're wrinkled, you're going to be wrinkled, and I can't do anything about it.

And finally...let's not forget about the little details - things like neat and clean fingernails and toes, plucked eyebrows, or the ink stamp residue from last night's baseball game.  Make sure they're all taken care of so they don't show up on your close ups.

Your Senior photos should be fun and capture the "authentic you".  The above tips will help you get started with what to wear and how to prepare.  If you come to the session prepared and everything is in order, all you have to do is relax and have fun, exactly what you're supposed to do at your Senior Session!

Tulips in the Snow? What the heck! - Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/4/tulips-in-the-snow-what-the-heck---brainerd-lakes-area-photographer Golden, Colorado - Brainerd Lakes Area PhotographerGolden, Colorado - Brainerd Lakes Area PhotographerBrainerd Lakes Area Photographer, Deb Mitzel, traveled to Golden, Colorado, and captured the local flavor of this quaint community through her photos. I went to Colorado for a long weekend recently, and had big plans to take advantage of some great photo opportunities while I was there.  Initially however, it appeared that Mother Nature had another agenda.  We landed, picked up our rental vehicle, and drove about 40 minutes in whiteout conditions to our destination of Golden!   Snow was not part of our plan, especially since we had left gorgeous weather at home.  It snowed most of that night, then started raining the next morning.  Well, not raining… POURING!  So, the first order of business was finding an umbrella, then on to the alternative plan – shopping.  After a morning of trying on clothes and swiping plastic, we sat down for lunch to plan our next move.  While there, my friend spotted a sliver of “sunshine” out the window (I really thought it was a mirage), so we gobbled up our food, and headed out to let our cameras get in on the action.

We headed straight to Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which is absolutely stunning, and I can only imagine how incredible it is to attend a concert there.  It is open to the public when not in use for an event, and there are hundreds of people working out and running the steps there at any given time.  I wasn’t one of them, but I did lug my heavy camera backpack down and up every single step!  Does that count as a workout?  From then on, the weather turned around, and even though it wasn’t as warm as it was at home, we were able to get out and enjoy it without being snowed or rained on.

I spent the next couple of days wandering around with my camera, capturing the flavor of this beautiful area.  The City of Golden is so quaint and inviting, I’ll definitely go back again.  There are beautiful walking paths along the river, fabulous green spaces, and tulips everywhere!  I don’t know what the story is with the tulips, but they were everywhere – I don’t think I saw any other type of flower in town.  And, of course on the first day, there were tulips in the snow!  Now, that’s something you don’t see every day – the trees were blossoming, the grass was green, tulips were in bloom, and all of it covered in snow!

All in all, it was a fabulous trip, and I was able to get some fabulous photos to add to my collection.  Happy Spring everyone!  I think it has finally arrived.

Have a great week!

Business Portraits - Suite Spaces in Baxter http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/4/business-portraits-suite-spaces Deb Mitzel Photography: Blogs &emdash; Business Portraits - Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer  I think we all know how important relationships are, in both our personal and professional lives.  Think about the people you hang out with, or the people you choose to do business with - if you're like most of us, you want to be around people you know, like, and trust.  Many years ago, I got to know Karen Kirt, owner of Suite Spaces in Baxter through local networking events, and soon discovered that she was the "go to" person for office equipment and furniture in the Brainerd Lakes Area.  I first called on her several years ago when my company needed file cabinets, and she found exactly what we needed at a very fair price.  Because of the way she handled that very first transaction, we have continued to call on her as our business needs change, and she has always delivered with efficiency and sincere professionalism.

When I decided to venture out and take my photography to the next level, Karen was one of the first to offer me a job photographing her staff for a new website she was developing.  I have grown quite a bit in my photography since that first session with her team, but remain grateful for that initial opportunity and her continued confidence in my work.  Karen's business continues to grow, and I recently brought some of her team members into my studio for headshots.

Karen knows the value of relationships, and treats her customers with integrity and professionalism, so if you or your company are designing a new workspace, or just need a couple of file cabinets or chairs, please connect with Karen and her team.  They'll take great care of you!  You can find them online at www.suitespaces.com

Relationships matter...Have a great week developing the ones that matter to you!

Welcome, Little Brother - Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/4/welcome-little-brother Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer - Maternity SessionBaby number two on the way When we scheduled the maternity session for this young couple within a couple of weeks of their due date, I knew we were pushing the limit on time, but I had no idea how true that really was!  We met at the Arboretum in Baxter on one of the first nice days of the year, and even though it was a little chilly, they were troopers, and we got some great photos.  While they were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their baby boy, they did have a couple of things to get done first, namely their daughter's 2nd Birthday Party that coming weekend.  But as things often go, their little guy had other plans, and I got word the following morning that they were in the hospital, about to have a baby!  Their beautiful, baby boy arrived later that day, on his big sister's birthday - I'm not sure how well sharing a birthday will go over for future birthday parties, but I'm certain it was a day of great celebration this year!  Congratulations!

Let's go Racing!  Race season is right around the corner for Chris Bishop and his Bishop's Performance Motorsports team from Grand Rapids, Minnesota.  I was fortunate to have him in my studio recently, and discovered a man with a great sense of humor and a sincere passion for the sport he loves - drag racing.  Whether barreling down the strip at Brainerd International Raceway, or setting a jig on a Minnesota Lake, I get the impression that this guy is "all in".  He's had  considerable success in his racing career, but was clear that he is ready to hit it hard in 2015 and bring home a few more Wally's to add to his collection.  The Wally is drag racing's most prestigious trophy, and I have no doubt there will be more in Chris's future.

To find out a little more about Chris and his Bishop's Performance Motorsports team, please check out his Facebook page, www.facebook.com/bishopsperformancemotorsports, or his website, www.bpmracer.com.     Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer - Bishop's Performance Motorsports RacingThe infamous "Wally's" - Chris Bishop of Bishop's Performance Motorsports Racing

I am looking forward to capturing some on-track action with Chris and the team in the coming months.  Ear Protection ...check, Camera... check...Let's go Racing!

Have a great season, Chris and Team!

She grew up hunting and fishing in the Brainerd Lakes Area, and recently launched her own Facebook page - The Upland Huntress - you can find her at www.facebook.com/uplandhuntress.  Here, she shares her love of all things outdoors, including tips and insights from her hunting and fishing trips, and is quick to encourage and lift up others who share a similar passion.  It is clear that she loves Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer - The Upland HuntressKelli - "The Upland Huntress"Follow her on Facebook for her insights into everything outdoors. her family dearly, and got her intense love of nature from many outdoor adventures with her Dad.    If you're interested in hunting and fishing, or just want to support such a positive person doing what she loves, please take a minute to check out her page and show her some love.

I'm sure there are more layers to Kelli that I haven't discovered yet, but am grateful to have had the opportunity to capture her spirit and passion through the lens of my camera.

Follow your passion, and make it a great week!

Brainerd Lakes Area Field Trip - Brainerd Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/2/field-trip---brainerd-photographer In the "hurry up and get there" world we live in, it's so easy to look past the beauty that surrounds us or just take it for granted. As a photographer, I pride myself on seeing the beauty around me, but even I have to remind myself to look up, out, and back once in while.  It's so easy to get caught up in where we've got to be that we don't take time to appreciate the beauty along the way.  I find myself consciously taking note of the beauty each day as I drive to work.  Whether it's a beautiful sunrise, fresh-fallen snow on the evergreens, or a deer standing by the side of the road, it's a great way to start the day.

Once in a while, I make it a point to get up early on a weekend morning and set out on mission to discover some new beauty right here in the Brainerd Lakes Area.  I set out early one Saturday morning recently, and caught a beautiful sunrise from Crow Wing State Park, then headed East and drove through some beautiful farm country, where I captured a great old  barn, and then made my way back to the Northland Arboretum in Baxter, where I always find great photo opportunities.

There's beauty all around us if we take a moment to stop and notice it - take a moment this week as you're "hurrying up to get there" and take it all in.  You'll be glad you did.

Have a great week!

I recently got a new camera and wanted to test it out on some outdoor photos.  Our currently brown and white landscape in the Brainerd Lakes Area isn't really tripping my trigger at this point, so I decided to stop by the Northland Arboretum in Baxter to see if the birds were out.  It was a balmy 10 degrees, so as much as I was into getting some shots, I wasn't up for spending much time out in the cold.  I found a squirrel and a few birds hanging out at one of the feeders.  Fortunately for me, the parking lot was almost empty, and I could shoot right from the comfort of my vehicle...no hearty Minnesota action going on here, my friends!  Well, not today anyway...

I'm sure the birds (and the Arb staff) didn't appreciate my industrious squirrel friend stealing their food, but it did make for some nice shots.  As I was sitting there watching, from the comfort of my vehicle, I was struck by how active and chipper the birds and the squirrel were, despite the cold - wish I had some of that in me right now!  Might make these frigid Minnesota temps a little more pleasant.

Have a great week!

Big Rocks - Brainerd Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/3/big-rocks Brainerd Lakes Area PhotographerRed Rock Canyon National Conservation AreaPhotos captured in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada by Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer, Deb Mitzel.

Have you been around long enough to have read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey?  One of the key concepts he taught was to "Put First Things First".  To effectively illustrate his point, he recounted the story of a man speaking to a group of over-achievers.  The speaker brought out a one gallon, wide-mouth Mason jar and began to put a number of fist-size rocks in it.  When he had placed in as many as he could, he asked the group if the jar was full.  When everyone quickly responded "Yes", he said, "Really?" and proceeded to pour in gravel, sand, then finally water, after each one asked if the jar was full.  They had learned not to say yes after the first time, but when asked to share the point of the illustration, one person said, "...no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard, you can always fit more things into it!".   Seems like a rational answer, but the speaker responded by saying, "No, that's not the Brainerd Lakes Area PhotographerRed Rock Canyon National Conservation AreaPhotos captured in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada by Brainerd Lakes Area Photographer, Deb Mitzel. point.  The truth this illustration teaches us is this: If you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in at all."

Hmmm...makes you think, doesn't it?   What are the "big rocks" in your life?  Family, friends, faith, health?  And are you giving them the attention they deserve?  Are you spending your time doing things that matter or things that just fill you up?  I certainly don't pretend to have all the answers, but I'm pretty sure we can all use a reminder once in a while.  I've had a tendency to let my personal life revolve around the needs and time requirements of my job, but the older I get, the more I realize how important it is to strive for some sort of balance.  For me, that means carving out time for other things that matter - things that fill me up.  I now make more time for yoga, vacations with my husband, and pursuing my passion for photography.   In the end, I am healthier and happier, and end up being more effective in my work.  Striving for balance is an ongoing goal, but if we can remember the "Big Rock" theory, perhaps we can have a better chance of achieving it.

In line with the "big rock" theme, I thought I'd share some photos I took recently at Red Rock National Conservation Area outside Las Vegas.  It was a great trip away with my husband and I also had the chance to spend some time on my photography. Win-Win!

Have a great week and remember to put the "big rocks" in first!

Sunrise, Sunset... http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/2/sunrise-sunset As much as I'm starting to hate the cold of our Minnesota winters, I have to admit that there have been some absolutely beautiful sunrises and sunsets in the past couple of weeks.  I always carry my camera with me, and have been fortunate to catch a few of them.  Early in the morning from my office at my day job, I can often see the colors of the sunrise reflecting off the building across the parking lot.  I have been lured away from my desk more than once to see what's going on outside.  I don't have any idea how these cold temps we've been having play a part in the beautiful skies we've seen lately, but I've certainly enjoyed the view.

It still doesn't make me a fan of this cold weather, but the beauty has definitely warmed my heart.

Make it a great week!

Spring WILL come to the Brainerd Lakes Area! http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/2/spring-is-coming-to-the-brainerd-lakes-area As I sit here with the sun shining in my window, it is hard to believe that it is really 9 degrees below zero at midday!  Yes, BELOW zero!  Earlier today, before I realized how crisp it was outside, I had actually considered heading out to take some photos.  Nope, not today...Instead I'll stay inside and sip my hot coffee while snuggled up in my fleece blanket.

The good news is that spring is bound to come soon, so I think I'll just sit here and dream of all the beautiful photos I'll be able to take in a few short weeks.  Oh sure, there will be more cold days and a lot more snow (it IS almost Minnesota High School hockey tournament time, isn't it?), but before we know it, the flowers will be blooming and we'll be able to go outside with only one layer of clothing on.  Hard to believe right now, but I have faith...In the meantime, do some spring dreaming of your own inspired by these images from springs past.

Have a great week and stay warm! Spring bloomsSpring blooms in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Spring bloomsSpring blooms in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

Seniors Rule! ~ Brainerd Lakes Area Senior Photographer http://www.debmitzelphotography.com/blog/2015/1/seniors-rule Senior Portraits - Brainerd PhotographerSenior Portraits - Brainerd PhotographerSenior portraits of Sara, a Brainerd, MN high school senior captured by Deb Mitzel Photography, located in the heart of the beautiful Brainerd Lakes Area of Minnesota. 2015 is getting off to a great start, and I am especially excited about doing Senior Portraits this year.  What an exciting time in a young person’s life - and what an honor to be able to capture it in their senior photos!  I remember having my senior photos taken many, many years ago…it was my first real professional photo session, and I was feeling nervous about my ability to smile, fearing that the pictures would all be terrible.  I was an outgoing, confident kid, but I definitely remember being concerned about how they would turn out.  Once I got the print proofs back several weeks later (it was BEFORE digital and online galleries!), and realized that I could actually smile, I had a whole new confidence that most likely impacted other areas of my life as well.  It probably sounds like a little thing, but I love the idea that I can potentially give another young person the boost they need by capturing “that thing” that can give them confidence or build their self-esteem.  We are all beautiful in our own way, and sometimes it takes a photograph to help us see it with our own eyes.  And that’s empowering!

This year, I am looking for a few young people to be on my 2016 Senior Model Team.  These current high school Juniors will get an additional photo session and the ability to earn extra cash just for referring their friends to me.  If you or someone you know would be interested in this program, please contact me for details or check out the following links on my website:
